Thoughts on Texture

I am looking for your opinion on adding texture to pictures. I am just in the very beginning stages of trying this, so I have a far way to go until I feel happy with how they look. I think that the idea of adding texture is great and when it is done properly with the right picture, I am always amazed. There is a great tutorial about using textures on Momology that I found really helpful so I thought I would choose a few pics that I thought would look good with texture and try again. So, I am wondering what your thoughts are on adding this to a few of my pictures.  Like it or not?  Also, I am borrowing my friend's Nikon D200 for the next day and I can't wait to get Lucy out and experiment with it.  It is a VERY big and fancy camera.  I am going to try and get some pictures of Christy's new baby girl, Ava, with it as well.  I will show you what I come up with in the next couple of days.  Let me know what you think of these.

Hi Kelly!

Is this my first time at your site? How in the world did I miss it! Sorry! Your photos are sooo wonderful! I think you did a spectacular job adding the textures. I especially like the one of Lucy on the drums looking up. She is truly one sweet child!

I personally prefer photos as clear and crisp as possible. Occasionally it's kind of fun to add texture to a photo but I find myself wanting to be able the see the picture more clearly when texture has been added.

You did a great job of adding texture though.

I love the textured photos, they look very professional in my opinion. Lucy is absolutely adorable no matter what kind of effects you add to photos of her.
What kind of program do you use to get those effects?

i like textures. i rarely use them but i think it is personal taste thing. i'm sure it is somewhat of a trend right now but trends are fun.

i say if you like the look and it doesn't take away from the photo, have fun with it and experiment!

I like the texture especially the first one. I love all your photographs. You have a great eye (and really cute subject)

Okay I love the one on the chair when Lucy turns around. What a great shot!

I like textures in moderation...these look really great! I love the vintage feel. Are you doing this with Elements?

Textured pictures seem to be everywhere right now! It must be the new trend. Haven't decided if I care for them or not. I guess it depends on the picture and the texture(s) used. I know it can be tricky to get the composition right! The last three pictures you posted are really nice. Good luck with the big girl camera--can't wait to see your pics. I would like to step up with mine, someday. In the meantime, I've been addicted to photography blogs. There is so much talent out there! I have so much to learn.

I really LOVE the drum series - I think they look especially appropriate with the textures but really you did a great job with them all. You did more subtle textures on pictures that deserve less and I really like that.

I can't WAIT for the review of the d200!!! How awesome that you can try before you buy, so to speak!

i really like the first one. and it is funny b/c i just read on a blog abt how you can get that look by buying a duaflex camera and attaching the face to your digital. i think you also have to cut out a piece of cardboard or something. it sounded a bit complicated but i was totally up for it b/c i like it so much.

can't wait to hear how the D200 trial run goes!

I really like it, too, because you don't use it randomly but seem to choose very well on which picture you put it. If you would be a professional photographer I would be your client for sure, because I love your style. You have a great eye. My favorite picture here is the first one, it could be in print in a commercial or something!

Coming out of the shadows (read:lurker!) to say - the pictures are incredible! I love the texture and I think it adds interest to the already breathtaking images. I love to read your blog but I really started "dropping by" for the photographs. Just beautiful! And it doesn't hurt that you have such a beautiful subject to photograph! :0) Lucy is so precious.

I really love some of these and as usual, can't get over how professional they look! I think the first few are my favorite. You did an awesome job with all of them! In general, I'm on the fence about the textures - I love some and could do without others. Maybe because so many of my photographs, after I print them, Taylor gets hold of them they end up crinkled up and in a wad and I'm trying to smooth them back out...so I'm not as drawn to the textures that make the pictures look too beat up because I'm always fighting against that in real life!

D200 huh? SO fun. How will you ever be happy with "just" a D80 after that?!

I really like it.

My faves are 1, 3 and 7. I have never been a huge fan of textures but I gotta say that these look really great!

Ohhh, the D200. I cannot wait to hear how that goes!

Let's be honest...your pictures look good any way you edit them! I like the texture for a little something different, but overall, I like your "crisp & clean" pics the most! It would be hard for any pic of Miss Lucy to not just be perfect:)!

Really like the textures on the drum picture.

Oh I just love all your texture pics! You inspire me with your beautiful shots! To think I used to be in photography and now I'm lucky to just get a shot and get it on my blog quickly. love the ones with drums! It looks like a piece of art! Ryker just started drum lessons, your hubby's set would rock his world!

Kelly, Have you ever thought about turning your blog into a book ? I just did my first one and it turned out awesome. You should look into it. With all the wonderful pictures you take, your book would be awesome. I am going to make a book every year for Stella for her birthday. Just a good way to have her life on pages as a back up to her blog. Courtney

You should really consider professional photography... especially for kids.

Hi, I am Meredith's friend, and these pictures are absolutely amazing! Did you do this in photoshop? You really have a beautiful little girl! We are going to need you to take pics of our babies when you are coming to Fayetteville. HA!

LOVE your use of textures!

I really like the texture in the photos with the drums - I think those photos look amazing. I am not keen on texture in the 3rd photo down (Lucy in her lovely pettiskirt). (I love Lucy in the pettiskirt, it's just the texture I'm not sure about.)

Wow, this is great stuff! Is this your first time working with textures? You rocked it! I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. I love #3 with the tutu, and the last 3 with drums. Great work!
