Sad Sad Baby

On Monday Lucy had a doctor's appointment to start her first round of vaccines. The shots did not settle well with her, at all. She spent a day and half as a very upset baby girl. It was awful to watch. She had a fever and was overall just unhappy. She woke up this morning feeling better, and we had to go and upset her all over again. When we got her bloodwork done a while back, two of her tests needed to be rerun. The doctor told us not to be alarmed at this point, but that he wanted to test a couple of things again. He said that most likely the first result was from poor nutrition. So, we took her back to the lab this afternoon to get it over with. Can I just say, that it was the most awful, pitiful, and sad thing that I have ever witnessed. It literally brought me to tears. They could not find a vein, but they looked forever. They pricked her once and missed, gave her a break because she was so freaked out, then pricked her a few more times and could never get the blood to flow well enough to get what they needed. This went on for a very long time until we finally said that she had had enough. The nurses were so sweet and felt terrible about all of this. Lucy was terrified, mad, clearly confused, and overall miserable. It really did break my heart. She screamed the whole ride home and then passed out for 2.5 hours. She woke up mad. We took her for a walk and she perked up. She ended the night on a happy note. The worst part of all is that they never got the blood. So, we have to go back again on Friday. She is going to flip out. I would if I were her as well. I am almost crying now just thinking about putting her through any of this ever again. I feel like she is not going to trust me because I keep putting her in these awful situations. I wish that we didn't have to do this, but it is a must it appears. Is she going to hate us? This is so terrible.

Oh, poor baby and poor mama too! We had to do blood draws when R was a baby and it was awful - she struggled so hard it took 3 adults to hold her down. Can you take Lucy to a Children's hospital for the draw? R~ had one of her blood draws there and it went so much better. (Better technology, faster, less crying!)

With the vaccines. Some make my girls really sick. We kept them motrined up for 2 full days and that made them less moody. And we did blood draws and then more stuff this week and well the girls get pretty hysterical. They won't remember it later!

Good luck friday-

Kelly,
I have been following your blog since my sister was considering adopting from Vietnam, and I must admit now I am hooked! She is such a beautiful girl and I am so happy you are finally a family! When I read your post I felt sick for you. My best friend adopted from China and she too had a horrible experience with docs and bloodwork in general. May I make a suggestion? I am an R.N. and in canada we use EMLA it is a topical ointment that numbs the skin, you apply it a good 1/2 hour prior to the test. At least it may make her a little more comfortable, also maybe applying warm compresses prior (like a warm facecloth will help bring the veins to the surface.) As mommies I think it hurts us more, to watch our children in pain. Good luck and you'll be in my prayers on friday!

So sorry for all of you. We took Annslee to the pediatrician after 3 days home...she got 4 shots and a huge blood draw (yeah..not her finger or ankle..in the arm!) I couldn't believe it..took three nurses to hold her down. I had her immunization records but they still wanted to do them over. We were lucky that she never has a reaction but still the screaming during was so hard.
I hope she feels better soon. Sorry I missed you in Nashville last weekend..we were in Charlotte : )

SO glad you didn't have the non stop crying Aubrey had for 3 days, but anytime the cry is bad. Chloe had a hard time doing bloodwork the first time. It literally took 3 hours, once they would get blodd, it wouldn't flow very fast and then would stop and they would have to find another spot. It was awful. Then the lab froze one to many of them...needless to say I was a bit bothered at having to take the poor thing back in again. The next time we were in and out in a matter of 20 minutes...strange. Hoping for a 20 minute one for you this time around!

Poor baby Lucy! She will NOT hold it against you. She knows who loves her and takes care of her.

Awww, she won't hold it against you. YOU probably will feel way worse in a day or so than she will. Poor thing. It is soo hard, isn't it? The worst part of motherhood, for sure.
