Still Hanging On

Lucy is still sick. She has ever so kindly shared her awful cold with me. I am very congested and headachey and I just don't feel great. Justin is home though and has been a huge help. This would not have been fun with just Lucy and I. In case you all forgot or for my newer readers, last cold season was AWFUL for us once we were home with Lucy. She got three colds right after one another. She has what the doctors like to call a sensitive gag reflex and she throws up very easy. So what does that have to do with colds? Well, whenever she has drainage, it causes coughing, and the coughing ends up in a huge vomit session. This only occurs at night when she is laying down. So, last night she was exhausted and passed out so easily. About 45 minutes after she had been down, the coughing started. Sometimes she can cough a few times without getting sick. Not last night. She started a huge cough and before we could get to her, up came everything. It was the biggest mess. She had to have another bath, obviously the whole crib had to be changed, etc. Luckily, none of it got on the bumper pads, but they are outta there until we are vomit free. I got her bathed. Justin got the bed changed. I got her back to sleep. And Justin did the laundry. Again, it was so wonderful that I was not here alone, because I have done all of this alone and it was enough to make me cry and yell at my husband just because I needed to yell. One night last cold season when I was alone she threw up 3 times in the night. Yes, three times of me alone cleaning her, her bed, and getting her back to sleep. I really did almost lose it.

The good thing is, she is still in pretty good spirits during the day. Not 100%, but not that bad. We are just all so tired from the night wakings. And as others have said, it is REALLY hard to know what to medicate her for. Our ped gave us some suggestions since so many meds have been recalled. She is drooling so much that sometimes I think it is her teeth more than anything that is causing her being upset, but then again, I have no idea. Does her throat hurt like mine did yesterday? Is her mouth sore? Does she have a headache like me? So hard. I am hoping we are through the hardest part. No barfing yet tonight. I pray I did not just jinx that. I am too tired to do it all again. Please say a little prayer that she and I both get back to our normal selves again soon.

Now that I have complained enough, here are some really cute pictures from Lucy's bath in our big bathtub with bubbles and all. She could not believe all of the bubbles. Justin turned on the jets and they just overtook the place.

those bathtub pics are priceless--she is such a cutie and getting so big!

It is just no fun cleaning up a sick kid in the middle of the night--poor Lucy and poor Mommy--glad her daddy was there to help. Hope she feels better soon!

I am the hugest baby when I'm sick and I would have come completely unhinged if my baby were sick and up all night vomiting randomly on top of it. Seriously I don't know how you survived!!! I'm so glad Justin is there this time to help out. I hope you both are on the upswing of this yucky cold. Tis the season I guess. Yuck.

By the way I didn't end up coming into town after all. Tony did and I'm glad I didn't come becuase he was only there for an HOUR!! Crazy. Sorry I missed you (again) but glad we didn't share germs! LOL

I am praying that sweet Lucy has an easier time this winter. I know that the cold situation was miserable for all last winter. I am praying that you all feel better soon. All that aside-what a great bath!!!

I truly hate to hear that Lucy is having such a hard time. I can totally relate with the cough-until-she-throws-up thing. I have a little girl like that living at my house. Thank goodness Justin is home -- what a relief for you!

What's worse than your child being sick? Your child being sick while you're sick, too. Yuck! So sorry you got the cold as well. I hope both of you are back to normal really soon. Sending big hugs!

Oh, I am sorry you are going through this! I have found that alternating Tylenol and Advil works pretty well. I'd stay away from the cough medicines...not just because they have been recalled, but also because I don't think they really do anything to help the coughing. My ped said that most of the coughing in babies has to do with the fact that they can't clear their throats the way we can, which is why it gets worse for them at night when they are lying down -- they get lots of post-nasal drip, etc. That seems to make sense to me. Anyway the Tylenol and Advil will help if she has a sore throat, teething pain, headache, etc. Hope she is better soon. Love the bathtub pics!!!

Oh I am so sorry :( Just reading this brought back vivid memories of my own 3 AM puke cleaning adventures. When Ava was about 16 months old she was diagnosed with RAD (Reactive Airway Disease - not the attachment RAD) and she had what the dr called bronchial spasms which caused the cough til ya puke thing. She had a really rough first year at home. All her colds turned into major episodes. Our dr always said no cough meds, no antihistamine. The only thing he wanted us to give her was nasal decongestant and a chest decongestant (expectorant)...plus some tylenol or motrin when needed. I guess the reason I've shared all this is because I want to reassure you that is does get better! As Lucy gets older I'm sure her body will handle things so much better and one day a simple cold will just be a simple cold. My husband has always worked crazy hours, so I know what it's like to do it all by yourself. I'm glad you have some help this time around. Keep hanging in there...you're doing a great job.

And adding baking soda to your wash helps remove the smell of all bodily fluids from your laundry. :)
